Oh god, did she just say the “V” word?

Vegan.

It’s that terrifying word that makes you want to run for the hills when you think about it. Questions arise like, “what do you eat?” “Why are you doing that to yourself?” Or my personal favorite, “Isn’t that a little hard core? You don’t kill animals to get dairy.”

No, I don’t hate you for eating meat. No, I don’t talk about it all the time and we certainly don’t have to talk about it. Yes, I’m getting enough protein. Yes, I take vitamins. It’s really not hard. I still eat whatever I want, just minus certain ingredients.

Why I chose to go vegan actually wasn’t because I’m a crazy animal lover. I do love animals, but I really wanted a healthy lifestyle. When I started researching veganism though, I was shocked and actually started understanding all those “crunchy granola people”. They weren’t so crazy after all. Everyone from my parents to my boyfriend have tried to dissuade me in some way from making this lifestyle choice. Even if it was only making fun of me. I guess to everyone who doesn’t understand it, here are the facts; And I’ll warn you from here on out it may get a little hardcore. I also think I just became “one of those crunchy granola people”.  So, here it goes.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE. HERE ARE THE FACTS.

  1. The planet is dying. BECAUSE OF US. And here’s a secret they don’t want you to know: it’s mostly due to animal agriculture. In fact, 51% or more of greenhouse gas emissions (Hello, Global Warming) are due to animal agriculture. That is more that cars, ships, trains, and planes combined.
  2. COWS ARE KILLING THE RAINFOREST. WHAT?! No really. Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. And 1-2 acres are cleared every SECOND.
  3. Do you REALLY think your body was made to consume the milk of cows? Are you a baby cow? Do you ever wonder why there’s such a thing as ‘stubborn fat’ that just seems to stick to you? Ya hon, your body can’t process what it wasn’t made to consume.
  4. Which leads us to the question, “What is your body made to consume?” And for that I’ll leave you all with this visual:

This post was not to convince you to change your mind or tell you that you too should go vegan. I just want you all to understand that while you’re chowing down on some cheese, I’m over here trying to save the planet.

P.s. I love cheese, and they make cashew cheese that’s delicious.
