Oh god, did she just say the “V” word?

Vegan.

It’s that terrifying word that makes you want to run for the hills when you think about it. Questions arise like, “what do you eat?” “Why are you doing that to yourself?” Or my personal favorite, “Isn’t that a little hard core? You don’t kill animals to get dairy.”

No, I don’t hate you for eating meat. No, I don’t talk about it all the time and we certainly don’t have to talk about it. Yes, I’m getting enough protein. Yes, I take vitamins. It’s really not hard. I still eat whatever I want, just minus certain ingredients.

Why I chose to go vegan actually wasn’t because I’m a crazy animal lover. I do love animals, but I really wanted a healthy lifestyle. When I started researching veganism though, I was shocked and actually started understanding all those “crunchy granola people”. They weren’t so crazy after all. Everyone from my parents to my boyfriend have tried to dissuade me in some way from making this lifestyle choice. Even if it was only making fun of me. I guess to everyone who doesn’t understand it, here are the facts; And I’ll warn you from here on out it may get a little hardcore. I also think I just became “one of those crunchy granola people”.  So, here it goes.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE. HERE ARE THE FACTS.

  1. The planet is dying. BECAUSE OF US. And here’s a secret they don’t want you to know: it’s mostly due to animal agriculture. In fact, 51% or more of greenhouse gas emissions (Hello, Global Warming) are due to animal agriculture. That is more that cars, ships, trains, and planes combined.
  2. COWS ARE KILLING THE RAINFOREST. WHAT?! No really. Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. And 1-2 acres are cleared every SECOND.
  3. Do you REALLY think your body was made to consume the milk of cows? Are you a baby cow? Do you ever wonder why there’s such a thing as ‘stubborn fat’ that just seems to stick to you? Ya hon, your body can’t process what it wasn’t made to consume.
  4. Which leads us to the question, “What is your body made to consume?” And for that I’ll leave you all with this visual:

VEGAN TEETH

With all that being said, I’m a college kid so here are my sources cited now that I have served you with the facts. If you’re interested enough, in these websites are hundreds of more facts. I told you the bare minimum.

This post was not to convince you to change your mind or tell you that you too should go vegan. I just want you all to understand that while you’re chowing down on some cheese, I’m over here trying to save the planet.

P.s. I love cheese, and they make cashew cheese that’s delicious.

So here’s the thing,

I am a college student.

And I am stressed.

No, that doesn’t even begin to describe it… But for those of you like me trying to balance school, healthy eating, working out, etc. etc.

You know the drill.

It involves commitment, and time, and a whole lot of effort that most of us don’t have, and you know what? That’s OKAY!

In balancing all of this, you can’t forget about taking care of YOURSELF though. Over the past couple years, my body was something I had been neglecting. In fact during that time I was eating fast food almost everyday and hardly sticking to a skincare routine. I was just so busy all the time, and living in the dorms freshman year definitely didn’t help! Let me tell ya though, I looked rough.

One night in particular I was feeling pretty blue; I was tired, stressed, out of shape, and honestly I just needed a break from life. I remember laying on my floor for hours scrolling through social media as a way to avoid studying for finals, which then turned to stress crying; more like sobbing. Did I mention college is stressful?? Anyways, in the middle of this breakdown I had an epiphany that my mom had sent me a face mask in one of my care packages, and decided maybe I just needed a little ‘me time’.

Then I did the same thing 3 more times that week. Not the breakdown part… just the face masks.

When I realized how much of a difference it made just spending a tiny amount of time on myself, fixing all of my problems didn’t seem so far away. I actually became more motivated in the weeks to come. I started with locking down a facial routine, then it was going out less and cooking at home, and bit by bit I got to where I am today.

Today, my face for sure thanks me. I’m happier than I was a year ago. My mind feels better and my body for sure looks better. I’m vegan most days, but come on sometimes you just need to cheat a little. I have my energy now, and way less stress for some reason. I just feel better.

It turns out a little ‘me time’ was all I needed, and maybe it’s all you need too.

Xoxo,
